Professor Pia Tikka

Professor Pia Tikka

Dr. Pia Tikka, is filmmaker and EU Mobilitas Research Professor at the MEDIT Centre of Excellence, Tallinn University.

She holds the honorary title of Adjunct Professor of New Narrative Media at the University of Lapland.

She is the founder and principal investigator of NeuroCine research group (2010-), a core member of the directory group of naturalistic neuroscience research project aivoAALTO at the Aalto University (2010-2014), and publishes widely in the field of neurocinematics.

She is a voting member of the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image and European Film Academy. As a filmmaker, she has directed two full-length feature films, several interactive new media works, such as Enactive Cinema installation Obsession (2005), interactive mobile-game The Third Woman (2009), and the cinematic VR experience The State of Darkness (2018).

She has worked in multiple International film productions, and is actively engaged with new developments in film and media industry. Tikka is the author of “Enactive Cinema: Simulatorium Eisensteinense” (2008).

In 2010, she was a Fulbright scholar in the Institute for Multimedia Literacy at the University of Southern California and a researcher in residency in Neuroaesthetics at the Minerva Foundation, Berkeley.

She was also a Visiting Research Fellow in the Institute of Creative Technologies at De Montfort University, UK (2009-2011).

During the fall 2019 she acted as a visiting professor at the Creative Media and Practice Research Cluster, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, Hong Kong Baptist University.

Currently, Tikka heads her Estonian Research Council funded research project “Enactive co-presence in narrative virtual reality – a triadic interaction model” at her Enactive Virtuality Lab, Tallinn University.
